Ao longo dos últimos 40 anos a pecuária bovina foi gradualmente migrando para as regiões Centro-Oeste e Norte do País, transformando a primeira no principal produtor nacional de carne e couro. Fruto dessa expansão, o País tornou-se o segundo maior produtor mundial de couro, atrás apenas dos Estados Unidos, que é o principal produtor. No entanto, a baixa qualidade do couro brasileiro e a falta de infra-estrutura para mudar esse quadro, mormente na região Centro-Oeste, impedem que o País torne-se mais competitivo no mercado internacional. Recent molecular research has confirmed that Cenchrus and Pennisetum (Gramineae) should be united. For nomenclatural, not practical, reasons, Cenchrus is accepted as the correct name. In Malesia there are 16 species. A key, descriptions, and notes are provided. Observations on the nomenclature are given. Some typifications are discussed, e.g. of Cenchrus frutescens. Three new combinations, one neotype and three lectotypes are designated.

In Malesia there are 4 species of Dimeria (Gramineae). A brief history of the genus with a key, nomenclature, descriptions, and notes is provided. Dimeria ciliata, D. dipteros, and D. fuscescens are reduced to D. chloridiformis, D. leptorhachis and its var. velutina to D. gracilis, D. monostachya to D. kurzii. Dimeria ornithopoda var. gracillima is not recognised. Cymbachne is doubtfully referred to Ischaemum.

It has been argued that the study of natural selection and quantitative genetics should have a central role in evolutionary thinking and undergraduate teaching in Chile. Extensive operational use of the concept of natural selection may seem consistent with this argument. However, advances of evolutionary knowledge in independent fields such as phylogenetic analysis, developmental evolution, and paleontology cannot be ignored. Over the past century, regional fisheries for Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) have been managed primarily for their provisioning function, not for ecological support and cultural significance. We examine the resilience of the regional salmon fisheries of Japan, the Russian Far East, Alaska, British Columbia, and Washington-Oregon-California (WOC) in terms of their provisioning function.
